POSITION: State & Local Tax Job – “SALT” tax advisor

The SALT professional that we are looking for will provide support to multiple tax functions (sales and use tax, property tax, credits & incentives).


  • Provide expert guidance and advice to clients on a range of state and local tax matters, including income tax, property tax, and other related taxes.
  • Analyze client operations and transactions to identify potential state and local tax implications, proactively developing strategies to optimize tax planning and minimize liabilities.
  • Research and stay current on state and local tax laws, regulations, and rulings to ensure client compliance and awareness of changes.
  • Assist clients with tax audits, examinations, and controversies, providing expert representation before tax authorities.
  • Prepare and review state and local tax returns (income, franchise, property, etc.), ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable laws.
  • Collaborate with internal teams across tax, legal, and finance to address complex tax issues and provide holistic solutions.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, best practices, and emerging issues in state and local taxation, proactively sharing insights with clients and stakeholders.
  • Participate in client meetings, presentations, and negotiations as a subject matter expert on state and local tax matters.
  • Assist in reviewing legal documents to minimize tax risks identified during due diligence, preparing reports for clients that summarize analyses and recommendations.
  • Support the main tax team with tax preparation, consulting, and research on a variety of tax topics as needed.
  • Potential future opportunity: Train and mentor a team specializing in state and local tax matters.

Core Requirements

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Master’s in Taxation and/or CPA/CA/EA designation are highly preferred.
  • Years of Experience: 5+ years of in-depth SALT expertise across multiple states, potentially with some managerial or team training experience.
  • Technical Knowledge: Solid understanding of state and local tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements for income tax, property tax, and other applicable taxes.
  • Research Skills Demonstrated proficiency in using tax research tools and databases to analyze complex SALT issues.
  • Client-Facing Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships with clients, represent them before tax authorities, and explain complex tax concepts in a clear manner.

Additional Desirable Skills

  • Software Proficiency: Experience with tax preparation software (ProConnect, etc.) and GoogleSuite.
  • Analytical Mindset: Ability to interpret financial data, identify trends, and make data-supported recommendations for tax planning.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple client engagements, prioritize deadlines, and work autonomously.


  • Mid-Level: Strong core technical skills, client service, and demonstrating potential for more complex assignments.
  • AND/OR Senior-Level: Bonus if you can emphasize strategic advisory skills, experience with diverse state tax landscapes, potential for leadership, and experience in mentoring/training.

  • Adaptable: Ability to work in a dynamic environment where client needs and tax laws can change rapidly.
  • Team Player: Willingness to collaborate with other tax specialists and contribute expertise to broader firm projects.

Working Hours: 

  • Our US business hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. MANDATORY overlap is 8:00 am to 12:00 noon Arizona time, the rest of the hours can be flexible with the approval of the head of the Department
  • Hours for some departments may vary depending on the tasks/projects involved.
  • Billable team ( Bookkeepers, Tax preparers, Customer care, and admins ) expect to work at least 50 hours per week during tax season, and weekends could be required. 
  • We need someone who is available for on-call emergencies (outside of normal working hours Only when needed).
